Why Kenya?

Visiting Africa has long lingered with me. My auntie Jean lived in Rhodesia/ Zimbabwe for many years after WWII and while I planned to visit her there, I never did. Now I am no longer teaching and more time avails itself, I've been able to locate a volunteer opportunity to work for 3 months in western Kenya with the Canadian Harambee Education Society(CHES)www.canadianharambee.ca

This group has been operating in w. Kenya for over 25 years, helping girls from poor backgrounds afford the costs associated with secondary education. As an agent for CHES I will be working with local staff to monitor the flow of funds, ensure the girls maintain their schooling and connect regularly with their Canadian sponsors, and generally keep an eye on the day to day operations of CHES and its office in Kakamega. http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Kakamega,+Western,+Kenya&sll=49.891235,-97.15369&sspn=24.456745,48.603516&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Kakamega,+Western+Province,+Kenya&ll=0.283333,34.75&spn=1.183741,1.51886&z=9
I'll be based in Kakamega from late July until late October, and after that I plan to do some travelling, in Kenya, but perhaps in some neighbouring countries too (Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania)
So, an interesting and exciting trip in prospect, and I hope that some of my pictures and postings will be of interest. I'll plan to post on a weekly basis, so drop in again to hear how things are progressing. Departure date is Monday, July 26th.
cheers
HL
